Archive: A Journal of Undergraduate History

ARCHIVE is an award-winning journal of historical work published annually by the UW-Madison chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Volumes 1 and 2 have both been recognized nationally by placing as the runner-up and winner of the Gerald D. Nash History Journal Award. An entirely undergraduate endeavor, ARCHIVE is a valuable tool in creating pride in undergraduate work and a greater university community.

Any work of a historical, scholarly nature is accepted for review by ARCHIVE. Short to medium-length papers as well as or seminar research papers, portions of senior theses, books reviews, historical essays or faculty interviews will be accepted from any undergraduate student, freshman to senior. Additionally, students do not have to be history majors or members of Phi Alpha Theta or UHA to submit their work.

We are happy to announce that you can now read ARCHIVE online!

To submit a piece to ARCHIVE for possible publication, please submit under the following guidelines:

  • Submit three copies of your paper, typed, double-spaced, the body of your text in 12-point Times font, endnotes or footnotes in 10-point Times Font, preferably under 40 pages in length. Be sure to include page numbers in your submission.
  • Please omit any mention of your name, course, professor, etc., in the text of the paper. The anonymity of an essay's author insures the integrity of the selections included in the journal.
  • Style, including endnotes and footnotes, should follow Chicago Manual of Style Standards. By submitting to ARCHIVE, you attest to the integrity and validity of your sources, and that you have duly noted each citation. Upon the acceptance of your essay for publication in ARCHIVE, you will be asked to attest to this validity again, in writing.
  • Attach the submission form to the top copy of your paper with a paperclip (NO STAPLES PLEASE)
